7:53 pm - Gold Gloves
Woot! Cesar Izturis won his first Gold Glove today, the first Dodger shortstop to do it since Maury Wills in '62. Steve Finley got one, too, his fifth.

Derek Jeter won his first this year. Nobody on the Sox seems to have won one.

The way everyone is covering it, they seem to have given the GG to Jeter solely on the basis of his flying into the stands back in July. (I actually think he's done a fine job, and the competition is less now that Nomar is made of glass and A-Rod isn't a shortstop at all.)

As we discussed back in July, that flying business was more a result of normal SS activities + retaining wall too low + damned photographers needing more space. So, although it's exciting and bloody, it's the wrong clip to use to illustrate Jeter's SS prowess.

Noticed a lot of Cardinals winning GGs. Edmonds not a surprise; and Matheny has the best knee flexion I've seen in a while. He makes me cringe the way elite ballet dancers make me cringe -- I don't think the human body is actually designed to look like that.

The thing about Jeter is if not him, who? Nomar is a fine shortstop, but he's always been just a hair below A-Rod and Jeter as a fielder. Cabrera may be better, but he was only in the league for two months. If Cabrera is still in the league next season it gets interesting because you're comparing two different styles, quick and rangy versus powerful with soft hands.

Edmonds made one of the two best catches I've ever seen. He may be the best ever.
