Hellmouth East

Since last Friday, the following events have occurred where I work:

  • Our firewall/router died, playing havok with our web site and our e-mail. We weren't back up to speed until Tuesday.
  • A number of our systems were infected by an entire family of network worms that entered through the breached firewall.
  • OSHA paid us a relatively friendly visit, but they did have a number of minor issues that need to be addressed fairly quickly.
  • The day after OSHA visited, one of our employees slipped in the parking lot and broke her toe, our first OSHA reportable injury in two years.
  • Yesterday, our phone service went down, except for the fax. As of 3:30 today, it still wasn't working, and various providers are still pointing fingers at each other.

There's been talk of sacrificing goats to whichever god we somehow managed to offend. At least that's what the people who aren't hiding underneath their desks are talking about.

Every other bit of free time I've had (including six hours today) has been dedicated to getting ready for a combined ISO 9001/ISO 17025 audit this coming week. In the past week, I have reviewed and revised sixteen SOPs and two quality manuals, written four internal audit reports, updated a bunch of training records, inventoried our quality affecting equipment, and otherwise gotten myself organized. Some of this crush is my own damn fault, because I procrastinate. I also work with a group of people who also procrastinate. I could have easily had the two manuals, and the SOPs that I'm responsible for ready weeks ago, had I so chosen, but the rest of the SOPs didn't show up on my desk until Tuesday. Sigh...

And on the Homefront...

More whining. In addition to the goings on at work,

  • my home computer got hit by the same worm that hit work, and
  • my cough continues to get worse.

My lungs never did completely recover from the infection I had back in November, but they were getting better until about two weeks ago. I can still get to sleep without problems, and there's no associated fever or headache, but during the day I've had spells where I coughed so hard that I pulled a muscle in my side. It's worst when I'm exposed to cold air, outside or in the car or even down in my basement today (way below twenty here in RI), which is a pretty clear sign that it's asthma related, which means the Flovent isn't working. Going to see the doctor on Thursday. It's so frustrating. I can't even laugh hard without coughing, and when I tried going for a walk, I had to turn around. No volleyball, either. Bother.

I didn't love last night's Farscape as much as most people seem to. It's possible this is because so many of people who saw it early by downloading it were raving about the episode, that it just couldn't match the hype, but I still don't see what they're raving about. It was okay, but I found a lot of it annoying, especially John and Aeryn dancing around their feelings yet again.

I'm still a fan though, and I want to see what happens next. In fact, I downloaded Bittorrent today, and I'm downloading the next episode as I write this. It actually seems to work much better than KazaaLite for this sort of stuff. We'll see.
