I visited a friend in Massachusetts last week. Really, when you live in the smallest state in the union it's not that unusual to cross a state border. The last time I left the country was a year ago when I went camping in Perth, Ontario.
2. What's the most bizarre/unusual thing that's ever happened to you while traveling?
Many years ago, I went on a camping trip to PEI and Nova Scotia with my friend Dennis and his cousin in Dennis' VW Bus. As we were on the highway leaving Halifax on our last day there, a car pulled up behind us and started flashing it's lights and beeping it's horn at us. The car was covered in STP (the oil additive) stickers. Dennis pulled over to find out what the guy wanted. The guy walked up to the driver side window, wearing a shirt with STP embroidered on it, and had the following coversation with Dennis:
STP!guy: STP or Wynn's?
Dennis: Excuse me?
STP!guy: Do you use STP or Wynn's in your engine?
STP!guy: I noticed that you have both and STP sticker and a Wynn's sticker on the back of your car. That's no good. Which do you use?
Dennis: Neither, actually. What's the problem?
STP!guy: I'm the distributor for STP products. I can't have you advertising competing products next to STP.
Dennis: They're just stickers.
STP!guy: I'm just going to take the STP sticker off your car.
The STP guy headed to the back of the car, and started trying to peel the STP sticker off the engine door. The three of us got out of the car and followed him.
Dennis: Hey, cut it out!
STP!guy: But I'm the STP man...
Dennis: I don't care if you're fucking God! Get your hands off my car!
With that, he finally backed off, and we left as fast as we could.
That was a bizarre trip all around. Originally it was just supposed to be to PEI, but PEI turned out to be terribly boring, plus we got drenched our first night there, so we decided to see what Halifax was like. Halifax was much more fun. On the trip home, the car kept breaking down, plus we spent hours at the border while customs agents searched the car from top to bottom. Good times...
3. If you could take off to anywhere, money and time being no object, where would you go?
I'd like to take a train trip across the Canadian Rockies.
4. Do you prefer traveling by plane, train or car?
By car, when practical. I feel much more in control.
5. What's the next place on your list to visit?
I am considering going to Maine with few other Buffistas. Sort of a make-up for having missed the volleyball trip last week. I'd like to go, I just need to figure out if I can afford to burn the vacation time.
